CHAPTER 27: SLATE

My mother kidnapped my Source.

My insides are quaking and I feel sick to my stomach. This sweet unassuming beautiful girl, my mate, was tortured at my mother's hand.

I try to pull my hand away, but she clings to my fingers, turning to look at me, her eyes wide in concern.

"Slate," she whispers. "I'm so sorry."

"Sorry," I repeat gruffly, averting my gaze from hers. "You have no reason to be sorry."

"I'm sorry that you're hurting. You're my mate, and I can feel your pain," she says, reaching up her other hand to pull my eyes back toward hers.

Tears are welling up in her eyes, but she isn't crying over her fate, or what she experienced, but my feelings.

A lone tear tracks down her cheek and I frown, watching it drip onto her lap.

"She'll pay for what she has done to you," I vow, keeping my gaze on hers. "I will make her pay."

"Oh, Slate," Cora answers. "We'll find out the truth. Let's not jump to conclusions. She was only there once. Every other day, it was just Seth and the man in the black hood."

I nod. Rowan and I have discussed many times what happened to Cora in that stone room. Every time we speak of it, Rowan's hands clench tight at his sides and his eyes flash with anger. We've spent many long nights speculating about who the man in the black hood could be.

But if my mother is involved, then chances are that the man in the hood is someone else on the Council. And that means that we're all in deep shit.

"We need to fill in everyone else," I snarl, leaning over and kissing her hard. She melts into my embrace, wrapping her fingers in my hair.

I pull back before the kiss gets too intense, but it's hard to stand up and walk away. I want to strip Cora out of that burgundy dress and lose myself between her thighs. My hand is on the doorknob before I know it, my mind whirling.

"Slate!" she calls, rising from the chair and moving quickly to catch me. "Let's not do anything crazy."

"We need to tell the rest of the Guardians. There are traitors in the Source Council and those traitors must be eliminated."

My serious tone makes her mouth drop open in shock, but I slam open the door and storm toward the great room.

Rowan is standing next to the counter in the kitchen, sipping some coffee. I stride into the room and slam my fist on the island, making my ever stoic friend look up in concern.

"Slate?" he asks, setting his coffee down gingerly. "Everything okay?"

Cora enters just a second later, her arms crossed as if protecting herself.

"Where are the rest of the Guardians?" I growl, my hands shaking as I try to keep control of my emotions.

"Kyran and Blaine are in the gym and I think Adrian's in his bedroom." Rowan's voice is dripping with concern and his eyes flit between me and Cora.

"GUARDIANS!" I bellow, not wanting to waste precious time.
